Ex-Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger has urged Jurgen Klopp’s side to be ‘greedy’ and go all out for European glory as well as the Premier League title.

The Czech, who won a UEFA and FA Cup double with the Reds in 2001, has suggested that a domestic title should remain a priority for his former club, but sees no reason why they can’t go one better than their Champions League runners-up position last term.

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: “Any trophy would be fantastic for them to win, but, obviously, the fans want the title because they have had to wait so long.

“Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005 and 2001 was a pretty good year too. But they still haven’t won the Premier League and that’s something that those fans would love to see change.

“Liverpool is all about the trophies, so I wouldn’t mind the Champions League and the Premier League, that would be the dream. Why not be greedy?”

OPINION

Liverpool’s start to the Premier League season has been so impressive that it’s almost as if the Champions League has been forgotten about to an extent. After a rousing run in the competition last season, the Reds seemed to be taken seriously as a genuine footballing superpower for the first time under Jurgen Klopp, and the German will be keen to remind his continental rivals of just how good his side are when the tournament resumes in the new year. Given the choice between another European title and a first ever Premier League crown, surely most Reds’ fans would choose domestic glory, and no doubt Klopp will be aware of that. The league will remain the priority, and for now, even with the remarkable progress made this season, dreams of a double might be a case of running before you can walk. In years to come, maybe, but for now, Liverpool have to win the league.
