Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that his side will not be able to compete with Liverpool if the continue their current form.

Jurgen Klopp’s men moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table with an emphatic 5-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday evening, while title rivals City face Southampton on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Guardiola suggested that his side would struggle to keep pace with the Reds if they continue their rampant form.

As quoted in the Evening Standard, he said: “What can we say when Liverpool keep nine clean sheets and score a lot of goals? We cannot compete with that in terms of comparing with them.

“So we look at ourselves, and tomorrow against Southampton, we have to do what we do, and try to win, and when that happens, everything comes back to a normal position.”

OPINION

Guardiola is right to be worried about Liverpool’s irresistible form at the moment. The Reds have been helped by a minor capitulation from his side, but for the most part, they sit atop of the table because of a remarkable run of form that even the most ardent and optimistic of Kop fans would have struggled to envisage at the start of the season. The manner in which the Reds swept aside Arsenal on Saturday evening was nothing short of incredible, and it’s difficult to see a team who could beat them this season. City will of course be the nearest challengers, and Thursday’s clash between the two giants will be a mouth watering encounter. If Jurgen Klopp can mastermind a win at the Etihad then his side will look almost uncatchable, and will surely take that massive confidence boost into the new year believing that it is their title to lose.
