BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas predicts that Liverpool will push Manchester City all the way in the Premier League this season.

The Reds are two points behind the champions in second in the Premier League table heading into this weekend’s fixtures, and Jenas feels the Reds are in it for the long haul this term.

“They’re a confident outfit and an experienced outfit now,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The blend that they have is not one for me that is going to crumble under any type of pressure.

“They’re a team that has not hit the heights of what they hit last year, which is not a bad thing because there’s obviously room for improvement. When you talk about mentality and pressure, this team is built to deal with it. I fully expect them to push City all the way,” he finished.

OPINION

Expectations are certainly higher on Merseyside than they have been in many years and Jenas is clearly all in on Jurgen Klopp’s team this season. It’s interesting what he says about the team being built to deal with pressure because that’s not something that can be easily proven in the early stages of the season. In big games they’ve done okay on the whole this campaign, drawing with City and Chelsea, beating Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain, but losing to PSG and Napoli as well.  It’s been a mixed bag in big games for the Reds so it’s hard to say that they’re built for pressure as a blanket statement. However, he is right that the team haven’t hit the heights of last season in an attacking sense, and that’s certainly a good thing. There is still room to grow with this Liverpool team over the course of the campaign – the attack will get better as time goes on. They are more experienced and they do look like they’ll be right there with City all season, let’s wait and see what happens.
