Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that he hopes to have defender Dejan Lovren back for the Reds’ crunch Champions League game with Napoli on Tuesday.

The Croatian international was concussed after a clash of heads in training and will not be risked against Bournemouth on Saturday after Klopp delivered an important update on the situation.

However, the key star could return against the Italian giants: “I hope so but I don’t know yet. It depends on how it develops,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo when asked if Lovren would be available on Tuesday.

Joe Gomez faces six weeks out with a fractured leg, and Lovren’s current problem means that the Reds have just Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip available at centre back at this moment in time.

OPINION

Suddenly Liverpool are facing a bit of a crisis at the heart of the defence. It sounds as if Lovren’s problem isn’t anything long term so the Reds should cope fine with Gomez’s absence, but these are slightly worrying times for Klopp. Obviously he’s hoping the former Southampton man will be back for their Champions League decider against Napoli in mid week, and his absence for that game would be devastating for Liverpool. For all the flak that Lovren gets, some of it deserved, he has looked solid ever since Van Dijk joined the Reds, and Klopp would certainly prefer to have him lining up against Carlo Ancelotti’s side than Matip. Not that the Cameroonian is a bad player, but the Liverpool boss is extremely fond of Lovren and will almost certainly install him straight back into the starting line up if he’s healthy. We’ll have to wait until Tuesday to find out, but let’s hope Klopp’s hopes come true here.
