BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson has delivered his prediction for Liverpool’s clash with fierce rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds go into the game flying high as Premier League table toppers and having secured Champions League qualification in mid week, but Lawrenson believes United will frustrate the Reds to the tune of a 1-1 draw.

“The way Liverpool are playing and winning at the moment means everyone is expecting them to beat United, but they have really struggled to get past them at Anfield when Mourinho has been in charge,” he wrote on the BBC Sport website.

“So, we know United are capable of producing a decent performance, and we also know that it tends to happen when they are playing a team that is better than them. That is Sunday’s scenario, and I am expecting Mourinho to set his side up to frustrate Liverpool and pinch a point.”

OPINION

A draw is a pretty bold prediction from Lawrenson. Liverpool will rightfully go into the game as favourites and will be expected to beat the Red Devils rather handily – when you look at the two teams’ performances this season you can see exactly why that’s the case. Even just examining both teams’ showings in the Champions League in mid week, Liverpool were far superior. They battered Napoli for large portions of the game and should have scored far more than just the one goal. United on the other hand were limp and lifeless against Valencia and couldn’t get anything going in their defeat. Because of that there won’t be too many people picking a draw, here. It could be possible, though. We know United can frustrate teams when they want to and Mourinho will undoubtedly set his team up to nick a point. Still, you have to think that the Reds will have enough in the tank to overcome the Red Devils eventually.
