Liverpool have suffered a blow after centre-back Dejan Lovren missed out on the matchday squad to face Burnley on Wednesday due to a training injury.

As confirmed by James Carroll, head of news at Liverpool, the Croatia international is feeling the effects of a clash of heads and has been forced to sit out entirely against the Clarets.

Lovren, who stands at 6ft 2in [Transfermarkt] has played a bit-part role for the Reds this season following a couple of injury issues which have limited him to just six appearances in all competitions.

OPINION

It was a surprise to see Lovren omitted from the squad entirely on Wednesday, with the centre-back expected to start the match at Turf Moor. Lovren has been limited to just a handful of appearances so far this season after carrying an injury back from the World Cup, where he reached the final with Croatia. His absence has seen Joe Gomez impress hugely alongside Virgil van Dijk, and his playing time has therefore diminished massively when compared to last season when he was a regular at centre-back. Games like this on Wednesday, against lower table opposition and amidst a hectic schedule, are ones which Lovren will have been expecting to play, but he has obviously been denied by this latest injury blow. Fortunately for him it does not sound too serious, although the club will want to monitor him in the coming days, with head injuries sometimes throwing up unexpected consequences.
