Former Arsenal man Paul Merson has heaped praise on five Liverpool players, and admonished Manchester United for their decline in recent years.

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently sit top of the Premier League table going into Sunday’s clash with the sixth place Red Devils, and Merson believes United are now way behind the Reds.

“I honestly can’t believe, over the course of three years, how massive the gap has got between the two clubs,” he wrote in his column for the Daily Star. “United always used to finish above Liverpool. Now it’s a no contest and that must really hurt for United fans.

“Look at the money United have wasted. I don’t know who’s buying all these players, whether it’s [Jose] Mourinho or Ed Woodward who is most to blame.”

“Now look at Liverpool and the players they’ve signed. Virgil van Dijk. Mo Salah. Roberto Firmino. Sadio Mane. Andrew Robertson. All smash hits. United fans must be looking at that and thinking: ‘Why haven’t we bought some of these players? We’re Manchester United!’”

OPINION

Merson is absolutely spot on, here. United have wasted so much money in recent years on sub-par players that it beggars belief. Mourinho has brought these players in and then seems to lose faith in them after a season or two. Look at players like Eric Bailly, Fred, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba, they’ve all had difficulty under Mourinho to some degree or another despite the Portuguese bringing them to the club. Then when you look across at Liverpool, they have bought sensationally in recent years. Van Dijk, Salah, Robertson, Alisson, Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum, the list goes on and on. They have signed numerous world class players in recent years and that’s why they have moved beyond United. Merson is right, the gap is huge between the two teams at this moment in time. Even if United somehow get a result on Sunday, there is no doubt that Liverpool rule the roost between the two teams at the moment.
