Gary Neville stated that goalkeeper David De Gea was the best in the world for his position when choosing between him and shot-stopper Alisson Becker for his combined Liverpool-Manchester United XI.

The Sky Sports pundit was asked to create the best team possible, in their opinion, made up of only Man United and Liverpool players ahead of the two side’s clashing on Sunday.

Neville revealed that while he thought Alisson was fantastic, he still believed that De Gea was the best keeper in the world despite not having the best of seasons according to some people.

“I’ve gone for David de Gea,” said Neville when putting together his combined XI, as transcribed by Sky Sports.

“Alisson is fantastic but I think De Gea is the best in the world. People question whether he is having the best season but overall it has to be De Gea.”

OPINION

Neville’s combined XI contained seven Reds players so you feel he was trying to put a Manchester United star in his team wherever possible. However the pundit was bold to share that he thought De Gea was still the best goalkeeper in the world as the Man United shot-stopper hasn’t had the most glorious of seasons. While the 28-year-old is clearly a tremendous keeper among the world’s elite, he has conceded 26 goals in 16 league outings this season and doesn’t scream that he is currently the world’s best. De Gea may not be helped by Man United’s leaky defence but there has been moments during the current campaign where he should have done better and as a result has concede goals he shouldn’t have. While Neville clearly rates Alisson, it seems odd that he has ignored naming him when making the best possible team ahead of Sunday’s match, as current form means the Brazilian should get the nod.
