Gary Neville analysed Liverpool’s current defence and heaped praise on both Trent Alexander-Arnold as well as Joe Gomez.

The Sky Sports pundit went onto say that he credited goalkeeper Alisson Becker with having the biggest impact on the Reds’ defensive improvement but that he had to admit he enjoyed watching Alexander-Arnold as well as Gomez.

Neville after raving about the Reds duo, proceeded to compliment Jurgen Klopp for introducing them into his first-team and continuing to believe in them.

“I think the two lads Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are fantastic, actually love them to bits to be honest with you in terms of watching them,” said Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (Sky Sports Premier League, December 10, 19:38).

“I think Jurgen Klopp introducing them and having belief in those young players is fantastic.”

OPINION

Neville had a lot of praise for Liverpool ahead of Everton taking on Watford on Monday and Reds supporters were no doubt pleased to hear him dish out the plaudits. While the Sky Sports pundit did end up ultimately saying that the defensive record of Klopp’s side had improved due to Alisson, which can be read on the broadcaster’s website, he didn’t shy away from highlighting every member of the Reds’ current first-choice defence. While Gomez is sadly sidelined for at least the next few weeks due to suffering an injury against Burnley, he has already proven his worth this season. The 21-year-old centre-back has defied expectations to established himself as the ideal centre-back to partner Virgil van Dijk despite previously being deployed more often as a right-back by Klopp. Hopefully Gomez is able to keep his form up upon returning from injury as in theĀ 18 appearances he made ahead of the set-back, he was vital to the cause.
