Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has left his Manchester United counterpart Jose Mourinho behind.

He says Klopp is so popular at the club it is “frightening” while remarking on how he is impressed that the German has transformed the Reds in genuine Premier League title contenders since he arrived at Anfield.

Nicholas adds that “people like [Klopp] and others are leaving Jose behind”, highlighted by the fact that the United manager is not a “serial winner” anymore.

“For a man who has not won anything since he got there, Klopp is so popular, it’s frightening,” he told Sky Sports.

“You have got to get something in the bank eventually or your job will come under threat as a manager, but everybody seems to love this guy. I love watching his team play as a neutral – they are energetic, they are attacking and he has turned them into genuine title contenders again.

“I think people like him and others are leaving Jose behind. Jose was a serial winner but now he will be patting himself on the back if he just manages to finish in the top four.

“If you look at which club looks like it is on the rise and which club has the better feel about it at the moment that it is hands down Klopp and Liverpool.”

OPINION

While Klopp may not have won anything with Liverpool yet – he has been in a number of finals but failed to win any of them – Nicholas is absolutely spot on about him here. There seems to be excitement in the air at Liverpool in regards to what they could achieve this season, and that is no doubt due to Klopp and his ideas. He has come into Liverpool and turned everything on its head, and what dividends that has proved for him. They are closer than they have ever been to winning the title since Klopp has been in charge – especially this season – so it would not be a surprise if they sprung a shock on Manchester City and usurped them as champions. You can tell that silverware is coming soon, so why can’t it be in the title in May? Like Nicholas pointed out, Klopp is gradually leaving Mourinho behind – perhaps he has had his time to shine already? We will only find out over the course of the season.
