Michael Owen shared that he hoped Liverpool attacker Divock Origi would start to fulfilĀ his potential after scoring the winning goal against Everton on Sunday.

The former Reds forward shared that he thought the 23-year-old, who has still only played a total of 17 minutes of first team action this season, had laid a great foundation to kick-on after being the match winner in the 1-0 win over the Toffees.

Owen revealed that he previously rated Origi upon the attacker arriving at Anfield from Lille and was excited about him signing as he thought that the Belgian looked a proper player after having an amazing World Cup.

“It must make him feel like finally I’ve started my Liverpool career because he came as a big money signing, everyone expected, he had an amazing World Cup and then I for one was thinking the Liverpool have signed a proper player,” said Owen on the Premier League’s official website.

“It’s been a real frustrating time and you must doubt yourself, you must do, he’s have to go away, he’s had bad injuries and to come and score such an important goal…

“Liverpool fans will never ever forget that goal he has just scored, he’s just written himself into the history books of Liverpool football club.

“So that should be a great foundation to hopefully kick-on and fulfil what was a really promising career.”

OPINION

If Origi can resurrect his Reds career then it will be an amazing turnaround by the attacker. The 23-year-old looked poised for the exit door in the summer and spent his 2017/18 campaign on loan with Wolfsburg, which reflected how far away Jurgen Klopp thought he was from being part of the first-team picture at Anfield. Yet the 23-year-old came on against the Toffees and scored the winner, so deserves a shot to shine. Origi may have missed a sitter moments before scoring, but perhaps by grabbing such a confidence-boosting goal he is now set to be back to the player he looked at Lille. The 23-year-old showed signs when on loan with Wolfsburg that he was a promising talent as at times he was a standout player for them. However the issue when playing for the German club was thatĀ he was just too inconsistent. Owen clearly believes Origi still has a chance at Anfield and he can be proven right if the attacker performs regularly to the level he is capable of.
