Graeme Souness shared that he thought Liverpool midfielder Fabinho was arguably the best player on the pitch ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri stealing the show against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that he previously doubted the 25-year-old as he was left unsure about him after watching him featuring against Bournemouth but was full of praise for the Brazilian after his display in the 3-1 victory over Man United.

Souness highlighted Fabinho’s pass into Sadio Mane in the first-half which ended up earning him an assist as his teammate took his chance to score.

“Fabinho played last week at Bournemouth and I thought hmm not sure but I think arguably if Shaqiri doesn’t get the two goals today, he is the best player on the pitch,” said Souness on Sky Sports Premier League (Sunday December 16, 18:31).

“That dink for the first goal, Mane.”

The Sky Sports pundit previously shared he was unconvinced by signing of Fabinho after the 1-0 victory over Everton as he questioned whether the player was the upgraded on Jurgen Klopp’s other options.

“I’m not sure if Fabinho and Naby Keita are an upgrade on what he’s already got,” said Souness on Sunday, as quoted by Sky Sports.

OPINION

The 25-year-old summer recruit wowed against Manchester United on Sunday and deserved to be named Man of the Match in some respects, regardless of whether Shaqiri scored a brace. This is especially the case as why the winger was amazing, it’s worth noting that his two goals took a heavy deflection in order to beat David De Gea in the sticks for Man United. Fabinho also played the whole 90 minutes unlike Shaqiri and was excellent throughout. The midfielder was the first to the ball more often that not and dictated the tempo of the game with his passes. Also as Souness pointed out, the midfielder’s pass to Mane was beautiful and he put the perfect amount of power on the ball to make easy for his teammate to fire home. Given that the pundit hasn’t previously looked like a member of Fabinho’s fan club, that has surely changed after witnessing him at his best against one of the perceived better sides in the Premier League.
