Liverpool have undoubtedly improved in several aspects this season, but one area of the pitch that definitely isn’t operating at the level of last season is the attack.

Mohamed Salah’s not been as prolific, Roberto Firmino as tireless or Sadio Mane as effervescent, and the team have struggled to blow teams away as they did last campaign as a result.

There is a potential solution lurking in a familiar location, however. French publication L’Equipe reported on Tuesday that Paris Saint-Germain attacker Edison Cavani is frustrated with life at the European giants.

The Uruguayan is said to be unhappy at a reduction in his amount of first team football this term, blaming the fact that he isn’t part of the Brazilian clique at the club – a group that includes Neymar, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Dani Alves – as the reason for his falling out of favour with manager Thomas Tuchel.

Whether that specific tidbit is true or not, there is no doubt that Cavani is frustrated with his current situation – and Liverpool should be looking to take advantage.

They got a close look at him in the teams’ two Champions League fixtures this season, and there’s no doubt that Jurgen Klopp’s side could benefit from the signing of the former Napoli man.

With the Reds failing to fire offensively, Cavani could be the perfect thing to relight the attacking fire at Anfield. At 31 years of age he isn’t a long-term investment, but he is still scoring at a staggering rate and is undoubtedly one of the finest frontmen in Europe.

With Messrs Salah, Firmino and Mane somewhat off the boil at this moment in time, Klopp could do with another attacker to spark some life into his anaemic attack.

Cavani has netted 10 goals and 4 assists in 14 games this term, meaning that he has directly contributed to a goal once a game this campaign.

That sort of production just isn’t evident on Merseyside at the minute. If Cavani is truly frustrated in Paris then it’s definitely worth Klopp placing a call to his fellow German and checking on the veteran’s availability.

Signing Cavani could be a game changer for the Reds and Michael Edwards should go all-out to land him in January. It’s something that could tip them over the edge from title challengers to Premier League champions.

It’s vital that Liverpool capitalise on Cavani’s degenerating PSG milieu. Adding another world class talent at a key moment in the season could be just the thing to propel the team to glory.
