beIN SPORTS pundit Andy Gray has boldly claimed that Liverpool had a better chance of winning the Premier League title under current Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers than they currently do under Jurgen Klopp.

Rodgers’ Reds team looked on course to win the title in 2013-14 until a nightmare end to the season robbed them of the opportunity and now some feel that this season is the year the Reds will finally taste Premier League silverware as they currently sit top.

Gray has had his say: “I though their best chance was under Brendan,” he told beIN SPORTS. “And I say that because they were nearly there, they were almost across the line. I don’t think the ones chasing were as good as the one chasing right now.

“This team is the best I’ve seen for a long time wearing Liverpool red. The best team they’ve had for… I don’t know how long. So I think this is the best team they’ve had, I think Brendan’s was the best chance.

OPINION

What Gray’s saying does kind of make sense in a weird way. There is no doubt that this Liverpool team is better overall than the one that almost won the title under Rodgers. The goalkeeper is far superior, the defence is better and even the attack is more fearsome than the Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling partnership. However, this is also a better Manchester City team chasing them under Pep Guardiola. The champions have such immense quality in every position on the pitch, and arguably have more strength in depth than the Reds. The City team that eventually usurped Liverpool in 2013-14 season wasn’t anywhere near as formidable as this one. So Gray may actually be right. This Liverpool team is undoubtedly the best that we have seen for many years, but the chance they had to win the league under Rodgers may have been slightly better. Still, the club’s fans will be hoping that this season proves to be the opportunity they’ve been waiting for.
