Paul Merson raved about the ability of Liverpool midfielder James Milner when delivering his verdict on Premier League players set to be out of contract in the summer.
The 33-year-old midfielder’s current Reds deal is due to expire in the summer but the Sky Sports pundit shared he’d be absolutely shocked if the club failed to offer him a new deal which would see the player exit in 2019.
Merson boldly claimed that any club would be keen on signing Milner as he gives you everything you could want every single week.
“I’d take Milner tomorrow I mean at any club, I don’t care who you are, the man is phenomenal, an absolute player, y’know gives you everything every week,” said Merson on Sky Sports’ The Debate ( Sky Sports Premier League, Monday January 7th, 22:50).
“I’d be shocked if Milner didn’t get another year at Liverpool, I’d be shocked, absolutely shocked I would.”
OPINION
Merson is spot-on with his assessment of Milner as he’s a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp’s team. He may be the wrong side of 30 but he makes his age irrelevant by the way he consistently gives his all for the team. If Milner was to exit in 2019 then it would be a huge mistake on the Reds’ part as it’s clear he still has so much more to give. The experienced midfielder has regularly featured this season as he has made 24 appearances across all competitions and due to that you feel a contract offer will surely be tabled for him shortly. The Reds may not be successful in getting Milner to agree terms, as who knows what he wants at this point in his career, but it would be a major turn up for the books if they didn’t at least try to secure his services for at least one more year.
