Michael Owen has predicted that Liverpool will beat West Ham United when the two sides face off in the Premier League on Monday.

The Reds were resigned to just a point in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Wednesday night, missing the opportunity to go seven points clear of Manchester City in second place, while the Hammers come off the back of a disappointing 3-0 loss to Wolves on Tuesday.

Owen says that the “title is in [Liverpool’s] hands” despite the mediocre result at Anfield yesterday, a result that could condemn the Irons to a third straight defeat.

“The Reds will have been disappointed not to have taken full advantage of Manchester City’s slip-up at Newcastle against Leicester, but they are five points clear with fourteen games to go and the title is in their hands,” he said in his BetVictor Blog column.

“I expect to see Jurgen Klopp’s side return to winning ways on Monday evening.”

OPINION

Looking at West Ham’s dismal few weeks, it is no surprise that Owen has plumped for a Liverpool win, even though they were lucky to get a point on Tuesday. There were a few times where they could have lost it after Harry Maguire netted the equaliser, and the fact that they are five points clear of City makes them look better than they actually were on Tuesday. It flatters them too much and this has often been the case in the last few matches where they have won despite not playing their best. We all know that they have not hit first gear just yet, but they will need to do so soon if they are to extend the gap between themselves and their closest rivals. If they carry on playing in the way that they are, then it will not be long until they are found out and slip up.
