Liverpool midfielder James Milner is expected to be utilised as a right back when his team face Crystal Palace on Saturday, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that manager Jurgen Klopp will turn to the versatile 33-year-old once again as a consequence of the knee injury suffered by Trent Alexander-Arnold against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Milner has operated in both full back slots to good effect in the past and so this news is unlikely to worry many Liverpool supporters.

With both Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, who can play at right back, injured, and with Fabinho filling in at centre back, Milner is the obvious candidate to line up on the right hand side of the defence.

OPINION

Klopp is having to deal with quite the defensive injury crisis at the moment. Gomez, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Alexander-Arnold are all out, meaning that the German has been forced into a reshuffle at the back recently. Luckily for the former Borussia Dortmund boss he has midfielders who are able to operate adequately in defence. Fabinho was excellent in the win over the Seagulls, and Milner has shown time and time again that he can fill in at either full back position successfully. He is a guaranteed seven out of 10 each and every week and Liverpool will need that again on Saturday. Palace will test him, with the likes of Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha, but the Englishman will likely stand up to whatever the Eagles thrown at him. Whoever lines up at the back, the Reds should have enough firepower going forward to come away victorious.
