Gary Neville has claimed that he would rather Manchester City won another Premier League than see Liverpool lift the title at the end of the season.

The former Manchester United man has admitted that he is not keen on the prospect of either outcome, but has suggested that a City win would be marginally preferable in a humorous verdict.

Speaking on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio, as quoted by Football 365, the Sky pundit said: “I said a few years ago when they were both going for the title that it is like having a choice of two blokes you want to nick your wife! It’s not changed, it’s getting worse!

“Do you know something? I have had for the first time in a few weeks that some United fans want Liverpool to win the title because they don’t want to see City win back-to-back titles and start a period of domination.

“I can’t bring myself to say Liverpool, I just can’t. It’s going to have to be City.”

OPINION

However sweet a first title in 29 years would be for Liverpool fans, knowing that it was causing a United legend like Neville so much anguish would make it that much more satisfying. The Reds have arguably their best chance in years to lift the crown, and it would be thoroughly deserved, not least because of the wait they have had to endure to win it back. In that time they have had to watch United dominate English and European football for large spells, and it’s about time that they had their turn at the top. Jurgen Klopp has spent big, yes, but not out of line with other big sides in the league, and he has built, over the course of his tine at Anfield, a side that Liverpool fans can be proud of once again. That is no mean feat, and the exciting brand of attacking football his team is playing, compared to the drudgery on offer at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho, is just another nail in the coffin.
