Former Manchester United man Gary Neville has delivered his verdict on Liverpool’s chances in this season’s Premier League title race.

After 22 games the Reds are seven points ahead of second place Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

Neville has had his say: “I do not know who is going to win it this season,” he told Sky Sports. “I said City publicly at the start of the season and I have said City always on Monday Night Football when I have been asked.

“But privately in the green room with Jamie Carragher I have been saying, ‘Your lot can win this, they are capable of winning it, they look like a team that can do it.’ And they can and we do not know who can win it, we have not got a clue and it looks like being 50-50.”

OPINION

It’s interesting to see Neville admit that what he has been saying in regards to City isn’t necessarily how he actually feels. The champions were his pick at the start of the season so he’s obviously going to stick to that, but you can see that the doubt is creeping in from a Liverpool point of view. He’s right in what he’s saying, Liverpool are capable of winning the title and they are looking good for it at this moment in time. The difference with Jurgen Klopp’s team this campaign is that they are solid at the back and they don’t throw away points to lesser teams. In previous years Liverpool’s title challenge has been undermined by a frustrating habit of drawing or losing games they should win against the division’s lesser lights, but there’s been none of that this time around. They are a very consistent side and they have the players to beat anyone in the world. There’s still a long way to go, of course, but they are certainly in pole position at this moment in time.
