European champions Real Madrid have identified Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Don Balon.

The Spanish outlet claims that Madrid want to pair Firmino with his fellow Brazilian Neymar at the Bernabeu, as the club bid to finally replace Ronaldo.

The 27-year-old’s fine form for the Reds over the past few seasons has reportedly attracted the attention of Madrid president Florentino Perez.

The Spanish chief is said to see Firmino as a more cost effective solution to Madrid’s problems than his fellow Premier League star Harry Kane.

OPINION

Firmino’s brilliance for Liverpool wasn’t going to go unnoticed forever and so it’s natural to see a club like Madrid linked with the Brazilian. When you’ve excelled as much as Firmino has for a team like Liverpool the only places you could potentially move to are Madrid or Barcelona. However, the Reds will be doing everything in their power to ensure that doesn’t happen – and rightly so. Firmino is one of the most underrated players in Jurgen Klopp’s team, if that’s possible. So much of his work goes under the radar and his influence on the team stretches beyond mere statistics. He may not be having his most prolific season this time around, but he remains as influential as ever. It’s imperative that Liverpool do not allow him to move to Madrid. There’s no doubt that he would form quite a partnership with Neymar at the Bernabeu, but he already has a good thing going at Anfield. Let’s hope that continues.
