Liverpool midfielder Fabinho is seen as a capable option to play at centre-back and Jurgen Klopp isn’t ready to sign new central defenders in January as a result, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claims that the Reds still have no plays to sign a new centre-back in the current transfer window despite Klopp being short of options in that area due to injuries mounting up.

ESPN report that the Reds 25-year-old is affecting potential January transfer plans as a result due to the long-held belief that he can perform adequately in that position.

It is believed that Klopp personally sanctioned Ragnar Klavan’s exit from Anfield in the summer as the 33-year-old wanted to play regularly football at this stage of his career and due to the fact he had confidence in Fabinho to play at centre-back if needs be.

OPINION

Fabinho played at the back in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the FA Cup on Monday and looked solid in that position. While the Reds suffered a defeat it wasn’t due to the Brazilian struggling in the role he had been asked to play. Based on the fact that Klopp seemed to have granted Klavan his exit from the Reds in 2018 due to his faith in Fabinho, it makes sense that the club aren’t about to sign a new centre-back due to their current injury problems. The German manager clearly considered whether a new centre-back was needed if Klavan was set to leave but if he was confident in Fabinho in the summer, there’s no reason why his thoughts would have changed. It’ll be interesting to see how the Brazilian fares against Brighton on Saturday as you feel that may be more of a test for him due to it being a league match. Fabinho had a slow start to life at Anfield after joining in the summer but has impressed in recent times.
