Former Liverpool man Stephen Warnock has criticised Liverpool attackers Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi for their performances against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

The Reds went down to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux, and despite Origi scoring, Warnock wasn’t impressed with the Belgian or his strike partner.

“Origi, apart from his goal, didn’t do much else in the game,” he said on the Football Daily podcast [13:08]. “Daniel Sturridge was disappointing.

“When you look at his performances earlier on in the season he looked like a new signing for Liverpool, but you can tell he’s not been playing, and those two were poor.”

OPINION

It’s hard to argue with what Warnock is saying here. It’s easy to look at Origi’s terrific strike and think he really contributed to this game but that’s just not the case. He was anonymous for large portions of the contest, particularly during the first half, and it was a missed opportunity for both him and Sturridge really. The Englishman was pretty dismal on the night. He never looked like scoring or creating anything of note. He flitted in and out of the game without having any real influence on proceedings, and it was disappointing to see. As Warnock says the Sturridge we’re seeing now stands in stark contrast to the player who looked back to his best at the start of the campaign. It’s clear that the lack of football is hurting the 29-year-old, and his form has plummeted as a result. For both players it was an off night, but at least Origi will always have that fine strike.
