Liverpool no doubt recognised that they need to do a lot better after their disappointing 1-1 draw against Leicester City on Wednesday.

They were lucky that they escaped with one point after Harry Maguire equalised for the visitors, and Jurgen Klopp has obviously realised that this simply is not good enough from a team who are currently five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

There were a number of players who failed to impress on the night, but one player who was a shadow of himself against the Foxes was midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

He was not his usual, energetic self – basically, it is just did not happen for the playmaker on the night.

The 27-year-old was always on the edge of important moments during the match, always lingering but never really getting involved, which is actually quite a surprise.

Perhaps he makes more of an impact coming off the bench as a substitute than actually starting a game, for he looked anonymous on Wednesday?

Either way, he no doubt knows that he was not good enough, and that his display has compromised his chances of returning to the first team against West Ham on Monday.

The Switzerland international has the talent and the ability to tear teams apart, and supporters would have expected him to inflict the same treatment on Leicester.

He is a lot better than what Wednesday night offered, but his performance has no doubt given Klopp some food for thought.

It was no surprise in the slightest that he was replaced by Fabinho in the 67th minute, as he was just off the boil.

Shaqiri needs to be far more involved from now on, or he the bench will start to become a more regular destination than he would like.
