Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella could be returning to his parent club early after an issue over his registration with Spanish second division side Extremadura cast doubt on his loan spell, according to the Evening Standard.

The 21-year-old completed a deadline day move to his home country, but has yet to feature for his new club, with the Standard understanding that the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have highlighted an issue with Chirivella’s registration.

That could force the former Valencia youth player to return to England sooner than anticipated.

OPINION

You would think that professional football clubs would have their houses in better order than this. Extremadura clearly believed that Chirivella could be an important addition for them during the second half of the season, but for whatever reason, they have failed to meet the requirements of his registration and now risk losing him before he has even kicked a ball. That’s disappointing, not just for the Spanish club, but for the player and Liverpool as well. Chirivella, should he have his loan cut short, will return to the Reds’ U23s setup, and while that is okay for fitness, it doesn’t offer the same opportunity for rapid progression that senior football does. All parties will be hoping for some kind of resolution, but if one cannot be found then this whole venture has been a massive waste of time that has ultimately messed the player around and gotten his hopes up for nothing.
