Phil Thompson has heaped praise on Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, suggesting that the Dutchman should be one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet.

The 28-year-old has established himself as a key figure for the Reds this season, and former Liverpool man Thompson has been eager to sing his praises, suggesting he should be the surprise first name to be chosen by the German boss.

Speaking to Sky Sports, As quoted in the Liverpool Echo (13.44), he said: “He’s one of the unsung heroes of this Liverpool side.

“I’ve told a lot of people… we had one player Ray Kennedy, fans were forever complaining about him, but we knew how good he was. Wijnaldum is the same and he should be the first name on the team sheet.

“He possesses great knowledge and awareness of where he is on the pitch. He’s a properly gifted player in more ways than the silky skills of the guys up front.”

OPINION

Thompson is right about Wijnaldum. He has quietly established himself as one of the key members of this Liverpool side, and while he may not be the most glamorous or eye-catching figure, he does bring a solidity and calm to the side that is of immeasurable value in amongst the dazzling array of the Reds’ attacking talents. The Dutchman is an all-round good footballer That might sound simplistic, but it’s true. He is a solid passer, tackler, runner, and reader of the game, and while he may not excel in any one area, his general standard is of a level where he is a real asset to his side. Signing him from Newcastle United when they go relegated may have seemed a little like a gamble at the time, but since making the move to Anfield, Gini has never looked back. He’s no Mo Salah or Virgil van Dijk, but his contribution is no less significant.
