Liverpool legend John Aldridge has slammed former Reds striker Stan Collymore’s ‘poor journalism’ after he urged Manchester City to sign Virgil van Dijk.

Collymore stated in his Daily Mirror column that City boss Pep Guardiola should do whatever it takes to bring the Liverpool talisman to the Etihad Stadium.

Aldridge was less than pleased with his fellow former Red: “Poor journalism from an ex LFC player!,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Who should know that for Liverpool to sell VVD to anyone, never mind Man City (for [John] Stones [and] [Nicolas] Otamendi and £175m) would be football suicide!!

“They also haven’t the pull of a Barca or R M!! Klopp’s building not demolishing. Our future captain also,” he finished.

OPINION

It’s no surprise to see Aldridge so infuriated by Collymore’s column. Obviously when players go into the media they have to be unbiased to some degree, but suggesting that City, Collymore’s former team’s fiercest title rivals, should buy Van Dijk is just senseless. What sort of reaction did he think his column would have among Liverpool fans and former players? You don’t see ex Tottenham Hotspur players coming out and saying that Spurs should sell Harry Kane to City, do you? It really is bizarre. If Collymore still had any feelings for Liverpool he surely wouldn’t write something as ridiculous as this. Plus, there’s likely nothing that City could offer Liverpool to get them to hand Van Dijk over – certainly not Stones, Otamendi and a boatload of cash. It’s just strange to see someone who played for Liverpool advocate that City should buy the Reds’ best player. Truly, what was Collymore thinking?
