Jamie Carragher suggested that Liverpool would not sell defender Virgil van Dijk even if someone was to offer £150million.

The Reds legend heaped praised on the 27-year-old centre-back and claimed that he had been so good this season that you’d probably wouldn’t accept an offer that was double the £75million (Source: BBC Sport) the club paid Southampton for him.

Carragher also backed Van Dijk to be named the PFA Player of the Year and shared he’d be surprised if the Reds defender missed out on the personal accolade.

“I do actually yeah (whether Van Dijk is currently the best centre-half in Europe),” said Carragher in an interview with The Anfield Wrap on their Twitter account.

“I think the performances he has given this year, I think he has been the best player in the Premier League, I’ll be surprise if he doesn’t win PFA Player of the Year and yeah.

“I think when he first signed it maybe raised eyebrows the amount but if someone was to offer double that amount then you probably wouldn’t take if, that’s how good he has been.

“And yeah delighted we’ve got him and as we know centre-backs go on a little bit longer so we could see him for a decade.”

OPINION

Carragher is spot-on with his claim about Van Dijk’s value as the Reds would no doubt not even be tempted by a £150million offer. The 27-year-old centre-back has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s side since arriving and has played a major part in the Reds now being considered genuine title contenders. While £150million is a lot of money, the Reds know that if they sanctioned the 27-year-old’s sale then they’d struggle to find a replacement worthy of covering the loss of Van Dijk. This is because just like Carragher said, the defender can easily argue that he is the best centre-half in Europe. However given how happy the defender looks and the fact Klopp’s team are capable of winning trophies and keeping the centre-back that way, then there’s no reason to suggest a team would even try their luck by submitting an offer. The 27-year-old looks like being at Anfield for the long-haul and that is a prospect that should have Reds fans thrilled and every other Premier League side jealous.
