Former Liverpool man Howard Gayle has heaped praise on current Reds hero Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming he is “made up” for the youngster.

Gayle played just four times for his hometown club, but made history by becoming the Reds’ first ever black player, and he has been quick to hail the impact of local lad Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “Well he’s going to be a top player you can see that.

“He’s a confident young man, I think he’s confident in his own ability.

“I’m absolutely made up for him because again, it’s been well touted about me being the first black player from the city and its been long overdue that now we’ve got somebody else established in the team who is going to carry that mantle.”

OPINION

It’s hard not to be impressed with Alexander-Arnold. The full-back is so good at what he does that it can be easily forgotten just how young he is, and how rapidly he has ascended through the ranks. When he first made is breakthrough he was clearly a bright talent, but one in need of a lot of refinement, but now, with a couple of seasons under his belt, he is quickly becoming one of the most exciting prodigies in the English game. His defensive game has come on leaps and bounds in recent times, but it is the attacking threat that he poses that really sets him apart. His ability to whip crosses across the face of the goal and the tireless work ethic that is fast becoming a hallmark of his game make him a real handful, and when you add to that his ability to crack a shot from distance, you realise just how special this young man is. He will be England’s number one for years to come, surely.
