Former Liverpool player Alex Kacaniklic has revealed that ex-Reds boss Roy Hodgson sold him by accident.

The Swede joined Fulham in 2012 as part of the deal that saw Paul Konchesky move to Anfield, but he has now claimed that Hodgson meant to get rid of another player instead.

Speaking on the fotbolskananelen in a podcast, he said: “It was a bit difficult for Liverpool to replace me, but when I was in Fulham and before I signed up, I had a conversation with Roy Hodgson on the phone, where we found out that he had chosen the wrong Alex.

“In his head, he thought he had sold another Alex for Konchesky. But then it was too late. It’s a little fun!”

OPINION

This is, to be blunt, embarrassing. To accidentally send the wrong player out as part of a permanent transfer speaks volumes as to the disarray and lack of interest that must have been taken under Hodgson’s tenure. More than anything, however, this anecdote shows just how far Liverpool have come in such a short space of time. To go from the kind of team that sells players by mistake to the sort of side that can legitimately be described as one of the best in Europe is incredible, and Jurgen Klopp, and Brendan Rodgers before him, must be given huge praise for the transformation they engendered at Anfield. It is unimaginable for this kind of humiliating mix up to happen under a manager like Klopp, and now, with the Reds in the ascendancy, you would hope that this kind of thing never happens again. As far as Hodgson is concerned, he’ll have just been hoping that this story never came to light.
