Liverpool are thought to be eyeing up Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter as a potential replacement for Joel Matip, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that the Reds are interested in the 23-cap Germany international, who has impressed hugely since swapping Borussia Dortmund for Dieter Hecking’s side.

The 25-year-old could wind up as a replacement for Reds centre half Matip, who is out of contract at the end of next season and hasn’t always been a sure-fire starter at Anfield.

However, the 6ft 4in former Schalke man [Source: Transfermarkt] has enjoyed an extended run in the team of late, making the timing of this story rather baffling.

OPINION

Yes, this seems like a strange time for a story to come out linking Liverpool with a move for a potential Matip replacement. The Cameroon international has been a regular starter recently and has been playing pretty well too. So this doesn’t make a lot of sense unless there is a feeling within the Liverpool camp that Matip wants to leave the club. Earlier in the season he would have been justified in considering that considering his lack of playing time, but he is now one of the first names on the team sheet. Having said that, Ginter would be a terrific signing for the Reds if Matip does move on. He has proved himself over several seasons to be one of the finest centre backs in the Bundesliga. You got the feeling that he was never fully trusted at Dortmund, but he has come on leaps and bounds since swapping one Borussia for the other. So, if Matip does leave, Ginter would be a tremendous acquisition for Liverpool.
