Serie A giants Lazio are close to securing a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool left back Alberto Moreno, according to The Independent.

The newspaper claims that the Italian side, who have resurrected the careers of former Reds Luis Alberto and Lucas Leiva, are in pole position to nab the Spaniard on a free this summer.

Lazio’s fierce local rivals Roma were also interested in the 26-year-old before sporting director Monchi left for Sevilla, while Spanish side Real Betis were also thought to be in the race.

Moreno has enjoyed a five year stay at Anfield after joining from Sevilla in 2014, but has seen his game time reduced in recent years due to the emergence of Andrew Robertson.

OPINION

This is a move that makes a lot of sense for Moreno. You would have thought that a return to Spain would be the obvious next step for him, but the slower pace of Serie A might wind up suiting him. He could end up flourishing as an attack-minded full back over there. Lazio, too, have a good track record with former Liverpool players, making them an attractive proposition for the Spaniard. The capital side have improved steadily in recent years under Simone Inzaghi and are very much in the group just below Juventus and Napoli, along with Inter, Milan and Roma. While the move would certainly be a step down from a club the size of Liverpool, it’s about as good of a switch as Moreno could ask for given his inconsistent performances in a red shirt. Hopefully this move goes through and he enjoys a fine career on the peninsula.
