Michael Owen has admitted that Liverpool’s title battle with Manchester City is akin to the ‘toss of a coin’, and has praised the two sides as two of the best in the history of the Premier League.

Liverpool hold a two-point lead over City at the moment, but that could be overturned if the Blues win their game in hand.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo (11.26), Owen suggested that the scrap was too close to call.

He said: “Probably the toss of a coin at the moment, certainly a two horse race. Who can call it? Everybody’s just guessing.

“Two unbelievable teams who will go down in history as two of the best teams the Premier League has ever seen really.”

OPINION

As per usual, Michael Owen is pretty much stating the obvious with this one. Of course nobody knows which way the title race is going to go, and of course it is just a guessing game, but you have to acknowledge that he is right insofar that it couldn’t be much closer than it is. City probably do hold the edge, despite Liverpool’s two point lead, but you would be amazed if both sides won every game between now and the end of the season, and if the Reds can pounce on even ten slightest slip up from Pep Guradiola’s side then they could just about see it out. There are a lot of ifs, buts, and maybes in any scenario that you try and draw up, but Owen is also right to point out that these two sides are genuinely very, very special. It won’t make things any better for Liverpool fans, but from a neutral perspective, things could not be poised any finer.
