Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson offered to pay for his own flight in an effort to play in Scotland’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Kazakhstan, despite undergoing emergency dental surgery, according to the Daily Mail.

The international captain reportedly took a black cab to Heathrow immediately after the Reds’ 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday having failed to find a dentist able to carry out the surgery he required on the abscess in the capital.

It is understood that he hoped flying to Glasgow immediately might help him to have the operation on Sunday night, but the 25-year-old was told he would have to wait until Monday morning instead.

That meant he was ruled out of Thursday’s clash on bureaucratic and medical grounds, as much as he sought to find a way to play regardless.

It is understood that Robertson is determined to make Sunday’s fixture against minnows San Marino.

OPINION

Just when you thought Andy Robertson couldn’t get any better, you hear a story like this and you realise that he’s even more of a stand up guy than you thought he was in the first place. You can just tell how much captaining his country means to him, and while it may be sad that he’s missing out on the match against Kazakhstan, it’s refreshing to hear how much he wants to be there when he could quite easily take the week off and go on holiday instead. It really speaks volumes about his passion for the game, and that passion has been evident for Liverpool throughout this campaign. From a supporter’s point of view, it will be promising to learn that the marauding left-back is determined to be back on Sunday, meaning that he should be definitely available for Spurs on March 31st, although if he does pick up a knock against San Marino then that excitement might dissipate very quickly indeed.
