Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been forced to pull out of Switzerland’s upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers with a groin strain.

The Swiss FA announced the news in a statement on their official website late on Monday evening.

The 27-year-old will now miss his nation’s upcoming clashes with Georgia and Denmark.

It is not known whether he will be available to feature in Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Tottenham on March 31st.

OPINION

This isn’t good news for Liverpool. The little Swiss might not have featured too much recently for the Reds, but the last thing Jurgen Klopp will want going into this vital point of the season is to be missing any of his players, whether they are regular starters or not. Shaqiri may have fallen out of favour in recent weeks, but there’s no denying the impact he can have on this Liverpool side, and how much of a threat the power he possesses can be for a beleaguered side in the latter stages of a match. There’s no confirmation as to how long he is expected to be sidelined, but the hope will be that this is a precautionary measure more than anything else. The only real concern would be that he is, by some distance, the Swiss’ most valuable player, and if he has been sent home by them before a couple of crucial Euro 2020 qualifiers, the issue must be fairly serious.
