Virgil van Dijk and Graeme Souness have helped Liverpool make a “quantum leap” in quality this season, according to Graeme Souness.

The Reds’ defensive pair were at the centre of a mixup that gifted Fulham a goal and nearly cost their side all three points on Sunday afternoon, but Souness was quick to jump to their defence.

Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, the former Liverpool man said: “People will point out if they don’t win the league or Champions League that it’s another year without winning a trophy, but each year they have got better and better.

“They have made a quantum leap this year by signing Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

“They both got it wrong today for the Fulham goal, but I can’t remember another time that has happened. They have been fabulous all year. Liverpool are a serious team now.”

OPINION

Yesterday’s error was about as calamitous as you can get between a goalkeeper and his defender, and it was fortunate for Liverpool that it didn’t cost them in the end. It would have been so cruel if, after weeks of outstanding performances, a breakdown in communication between van Dijk and Alisson proved to be the moment that gave Manchester City a real advantage in the title race. Souness is right to praise the duo for the improvement they have brought about at Anfield, however. Between them they have engendered a sense of calm assurance that has been missing for far too long on Merseyside. Eyebrows were raised when astronomical fees were paid out for a centre back and then a goalkeeper just a few months later, but on the basis of the shifts they have put in this season, and on the potential impact they could have in terms of silverware for the Reds, you would have to say that every single penny was money well spent.
