England manager Gareth Southgate has heaped praise on Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, suggesting that his qualities as a player are underappreciated.

The Reds captain could win his 50th cap for his country should he feature against Montenegro on Monday evening, and Southgate has been quick to sing his praises.

As quoted in the Echo, he said: “Jordan’s qualities as a player – which I think have been underappreciated at times – he’s such an important player for us and has been for the last couple of managers.

“Everybody values the fact that he has a winning mentality. Good players make other players play well.

“It’s not just about your own performance, but the impact and effect you have on others. When you’re a leader like he is, that is among his top qualities.”

OPINION

Henderson is the kind of player that every manager loves to have in his side. A selfless battler happy to do the dirty work for none of the applause, the midfielder has established himself as a key part of both Liverpool and England’s setup over the past decade for good reason. He may not always be the most fashionable or most eye-catching, but he is effective and seems to get the job done no matter what is asked of him. He is adaptable and diligent, and fully deserving of a half century of caps for the Three Lions. Henderson perhaps hasn’t played as much as he would have liked over the past few weeks, but when he has called upon by Jurgen Klopp he has performed at the same high level that he has for a long time now. The former Sunderland man is a class act, and probably one who should be given a little bit more credit than he has been in recent times.
