Former Premier League winner Chris Sutton has gone for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk over Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero in the Player of the Year debate.
The Dutchman has made an unbelievable impact at Anfield since joining from Southampton in January of last year, establishing himself as arguably the finest defender in world football.
Sutton has clearly been very impressed with him: “He’s had a good season but surely it’s already over,” he said on his personal Twitter account of Aguero in the Player of the Year debate.
“Only one winner… Virgil Van Dijk has had the biggest impact by a stretch” he finished.

OPINION
If there is a debate over whether Van Dijk deserves to be the Premier League Player of the Year surely his competition comes from City man Raheem Sterling not Aguero. The Argentine has been tremendous this season, of course, but Sterling has been City’s best player without a doubt. Aguero has missed some time through injury this campaign, whereas Sterling has been making a difference for Pep Guardiola’s side week in week out. Having said that, neither of them have been as impactful as Van Dijk this term. The Liverpool man has such a phenomenal effect on the opposition that it cannot be denied. Strikers don’t want to go near him and it’s likely that opponents game plan around the Dutch man-mountain. He has had one of the finest seasons of a defender in recent memory and so there’s no doubt that he deserves to be the Player of the Year.
