Souness: Liverpool are more pragmatic than Man City

|

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has said that Manchester City are like a Ferrari when making a bizarre comparison over their style of play to that of the Reds.

The two sides are battling it out at the top of the Premier League table in the hunt for the title, with Pep Guardiola’s side taking back top spot with a win on Saturday afternoon against Fulham.

Analysing the manner in which the two sides play their football, Souness strangely compared them to makes of car, insisting that more could well go wrong with City’s swashbuckling style in comparison to Liverpool.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday the Anfield hero said: “Would I be wrong to think they (Manchester City) are like a Ferrari car and Liverpool are more pragmatic, I’m not saying a Ford Mondeo but less of a Ferrari.

“With a Ferrari a lot more could go wrong, a lot more could go wrong with City’s play than it could Liverpool’s. Liverpool have the best defensive record, don’t concede goals, grind results out when they’re not playing well.

“They’re two fabulous teams.”

Opinion

That is one way to put it Graeme. Most people would say that watching Liverpool and Manchester City play this season is like having the Mercedes and Ferrari Formula One teams – to use another sport as an analogy – fighting it out. It seems as though Souness believes that Liverpool’s style is not as flashy or as impressive as their title rivals but you can be sure the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will not be too happy with that analysis. The trio have been brilliant this season, much like their counterparts over at the Etihad Stadium, and they are very much part of the reason why Liverpool find themselves battling it out at the top of the table. Could their defensive performances be the difference at the end of the season? Only time will tell, but Souness certainly seems to have faith that the Reds have the ability to get what they want.
