A tally of 20 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions would usually be a figure most footballers and fans would be over the moon with – but not Liverpool supporters and Mo Salah.

After the Egyptian winger’s tremendous campaign last year, with 44 goals in 52 outings, this has felt like a season where he has underwhelmed – a staggering thought considering he is sat joint second in the Premier League’s top scorers list.

Still, one goal in his last eight Premier League games is not what the Anfield faithful have come to expect from their attacking maestro and with a title hunt on the cards, they need everyone fit and firing on all cylinders if they are to topple Manchester City.

Sadio Mane has covered Salah’s barren spell with nine strikes in as many games but despite that, you can be sure that everyone at the club will be praying Phil Thompson is right about the Egyptian dazzler as he and his fellow Sky Sports pundits deliver their verdict on his recent performances.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News, he said (27/03, 12:38): “Mo’s finding it very difficult – everyone’s willing Mo to score goals. Mo you feel, when you need him, he always comes to the party.

“You just feel you’re getting ready to see him on fire before the end of the season. It’s probably concerning because you would like him to be scoring the goals. You look at the number of times he’s getting into (goal scoring) positions. I’ve talked to strikers, they’ll tell you it’s a thing of getting there all the time.

“It will come, all of a sudden you them hit the goal trail and they can’t stop. If Mane dries up, Mo Salah will come to the table.”

If Liverpool are going to wrap up either – or both – the Premier League and Champions League this season, Salah has got to hit form regardless of Sane’s performances.

The red half of Merseyside will be hoping he can click back into gear – or face a season ending in bitter disappointment.
