OPINION

There are few Liverpool players of the modern era who will be remembered as fondly as Jerzy Dudek. The Polish stopper wrote his name into the history books at Anfield with one of the greatest Champions League performance of all time back in 2005 when he was the man to ensure that the Reds’ miraculous comeback in Istanbul was seen over the line with a world class display in the penalty shootout that followed. His antics in that shootout, all crazy legs and erratic mind games, became an instantly iconic moment in Liverpool’s European history, and Dudek, a fine keeper on his day, ensured that he would never have to buy another drink on Merseyside ever again. That’s why it was so great to see the big Pole back at Anfield for a legends’ match between Liverpool and their adversaries 14 years ago, AC Milan, but this time it was an off field incident that really caught the eye. Hopping over the advertising hoardings to collect a wayward ball, Dudek stopped to play catch with a young disabled fan in the front row of the crowd, much to the delight of the Anfield faithful. It was small gesture, but one that will last a lifetime for that supporter, and seeing the beaming grin it brought to his face was a heartwarming reminder that some things are bigger than football.
