When you have one of the best defenders in the world in the shape of Virgil Van Dijk, you would be forgiven for saying that Liverpool do not need to recruit in this area in the summer.
However the number of injuries to centre-backs this season – most notably Joe Gomez, who partnered Van Dijk magnificently before he was struck off after breaking his lower leg – including Dejan Lovren as well.
Given Gomez’ setback, it would be wise for Liverpool to move for a central defender who can partner Van Dijk, as he has only highlighted the team’s need for more reliability in this area of the pitch.
One player that they should take a serious look at is Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, who is wanting to leave the Bernabeu according to Spanish outlet Marca.
To be honest, the 25-year-old does not need much introducing – he won the World Cup with France in quite remarkable form in the summer, and there have been times this season where he has been touted as one of the best in his position.
Many Liverpool fans would surely drool if the club made a move for Varane, as alongside Van Dijk, he would create quite the formidable force in the Liverpool defence.
Strikers are often afraid of coming up against Van Dijk, but they could be set for even more fear if Varane made the move to Anfield.
The impressive back four would be made even more watertight with the arrival of the Frenchman, so Jurgen Klopp must pull out all of the stops to ensure that he makes Liverpool his next destination.
After all, it has just been reported that he wants to leave – so what better time to take advantage of that than the summer?
