Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faces a dilemma this summer over what to do at the left back position beyond first choice Andrew Robertson.
Back up Alberto Moreno is set to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, and so Klopp needs to find a new player to compete with the Scotland international moving forward.
It seems like he is working on a solution, though. Spanish outlet Don Balon reported on Monday that Ajax left back Nicolas Tagliafico has caught the eye of the Reds.
The Argentine international is also on the radar of Liverpool’s fierce rivals Manchester United, as well as Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid, who appear to be the favourites for his signature at this moment in time.
The 26-year-old is thought to be valued between £13-£17million, chump change for a team like Liverpool. For a quality player like Tagliafico that’s really not much money, even if he wouldn’t initially come in as first choice at his position.
Top teams need two quality players in each position so that they can compete across multiple fronts. The Reds have that at the moment, but they won’t when Moreno departs.
Tagliafico, though, would be absolutely perfect as the Spaniard’s replacement. The Ajax man is undoubtedly a better defender than Moreno and he is certainly capable of pushing Robertson more than the former Sevilla man has this season.
His performances over the two Champions League games with Real Madrid recently show how good Tagliafico is. He wasn’t intimidated by the opposition’s coterie of world class players, he simply showed up and did what he does every week in the Eredivisie.
The thought of having someone like that competing with one of the team’s best players in Robertson is surely enough to get the Kop bouncing. This would be a quality signing that would help keep the Reds at the top end of European football for years to come.
