This season’s Premier League title race is hotting up, and it will no doubt go down to the wire like it has in seasons that have gone by.

Liverpool sit at the summit on 76 points, but seeing as Manchester City have one game in hand and are only two points behind, it is safe to say that we are in for a very entertaining finale indeed.

Not only are the Reds in contention for the league title, but there is every chance that they can reach the Champions League Final for the second year in a row after drawing Porto in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Former Reds player Patrik Berger has claimed that his old club are more than capable of achieving the double this season, something which he puts down to the contribution of the team as a whole.

“They [Liverpool] can win the league and they can win the Champions League,” he told Sky Sports.

“Obviously in the league they have to play every game as a cup final in order to be the champions at the end of the season. I think they need to win every single game. I think they can easily win the league and they can win the Champions League too. I don’t see why they can’t win the double this season.

“We have a great goalkeeper and defensively they are not really conceding many goals. Going forward, they have (Mohamed) Salah and (Roberto) Firmino, and they are [also] really solid in the middle. The balance is really good but it’s all about scoring goals and [Sadio] Mane has been on fire in the last few games.

“It’s great that if Salah is not scoring as much as he did last season, there are other players that can score – and that’s exactly what the boys need to do.”

The entire Liverpool fanbase will surely be in dreamland if this trophy claim comes true – were the Reds were to avenge their defeat in the final last year, then it is safe to say that they will have the last laugh over their rivals.

Berger is right though, the balance is good throughout the team, and this is what is ultimately going to lead them to success if they try hard enough. It will be a tough ask, but the fans will be drooling if they do.

Salah has not been scoring as many goals like last season, but like the former player pointed out, this is not such a bad thing in their quest for glory. The possibility of him replicating the heights last season was very slim, and the fact that other players have stepped up to the plate is the reason why they are where they are now.
