Danny Murphy has backed his former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard to cut it at the top level as a player, and Reds fans would swoon if the club legend followed his recommendation and laced his boots up again.

Gerrard has done a fine job since taking charge of Rangers at the beginning of this season, but Match of the Day pundit Murphy believes that he could still have something to offer on the pitch.

The Anfield hero scored the winner in his side’s 3-2 win over a team of AC Milan legends last weekend, and Murphy is of the opinion that his heroics were just a glimpse at what he is still capable of.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t know his fitness right now but what I say the other day and what I have seen over the years, he would – with a little bit of tweaking – walk into that Rangers team.

“[He would] boss it. He would be humble and say no but he’s still in his 30s.

“If he put his boots on against Celtic, it wouldn’t surprise me if they won and he got the winner because that’s what he does.”

Gerrard was one of the finest players of his generation, there is no doubt about that, and while he is unlikely to get back on the pitch just cause one of his old mates says he could still cut it, could you imagine the excitement on Merseyside if he did dust off the old Predators?

He would never go back to Liverpool in that capacity, of course, but the Gers would double their fanbase overnight with loyal Kopites desperate to see their talismanic hero rolling back the years.

Maybe it’s a pipe dream, but there’s no doubt that Murphy is on the money when he says that Gerrard could step out at Ibrox and look like the best player on the pitch.

Imagine the scenes if it actually happened.
