Andy Townsend heaped praise on Liverpool defender Andy Robertson while explaining why there is no reason to be concerned about the recent form of Mohamed Salah.

The pundit shared that while everyone focuses on the form of the Egyptian attacker, there were reasons to be positive and highlighted the impact Sadio Mane as well as Robertson were currently having.

Townsend in particular seemed blown away by the Reds’ 25-year-old left-back as he dubbed him an outstanding player and claimed his recent displays had been nothing short of incredible.

“Everyone focus on Salah because of the little run he has been going through but Mane has been unbelievable,” said Townsend on Sky Sports’ The Debate (Sky Sports Premier League, Thursday April 4th, 22:13).

“He’s gone up a level in a moment when their main man is supposedly…his finishing has become even more composed and better.

“And Robertson, I think he is an outstanding player and his last few games have been incredible.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold for a young boy coming into this situation, I don’t see him looking too pressured when he is flashing balls in with that right foot.”

OPINION

Townsend is spot-on with his remarks as too much focus is put on the form of Salah. While the Liverpool attacker was the standout player in Jurgen Klopp’s side last season, it doesn’t mean a slight dip in form should be all that is talked about. Salah is still doing well for the Reds yet there are other players worthy of being talked about instead. Mane deserves praise for his recent form in front of goal and Robertson does deserve credit for how great he has been as of late. The 25-year-old has excelled defensively for the Reds as he has hardly put a foot wrong and has also looked in top form going forward. Robertson has constantly burst up and down the flanks in his recent outings; and has created more than his fair share of chances for his side. So it’s nice to hear a pundit actually take the time to give the left-back the praise he deserves rather than keep trying to dig out the negatives in Jurgen Klopp’s current side.
