Tony Cascarino shared that Liverpool had surprised him this season by the way they have been able to keep up with Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

The talkSPORT pundit revealed that he was aware that the Reds were a good team but he never thought they’d be able to bridge the massive gap to Man City this season in the way that they have.

Cascarino revealed he thought the Reds could have closed the gap slightly on Pep Guardiola’s side in the league, but never thought they’d still be pushing Man City to their limits so late on in the season.

“I never thought Liverpool would get as close to City as they have, so they’ve surprised me in a good way,” said Cascarino on talkSPORT (9:15am, Saturday April 7th).

“Yes I thought they were a very good team, but did I think they could win the title? Did I think they could bridge the massive gap to Man City? No I didn’t.

“I thought they could make the gap smaller but never to degree where they’re pushing Man City to the limit with six games or five games left.”

OPINION

Cascarino holds his hands up and admits he didn’t see Liverpool coming this season. While several pundits will say they always had faith in the Reds to be title contenders, it’s refreshing for a pundit to admit Jurgen Klopp’s side have somewhat blindsided him this season. The Reds were a formidable force in front of goal last season but you had doubts whether they were defensively strong enough to realistically win the Premier League. However the signing of goalkeeper Alisson Becker plus the likes of Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk continuing to put in fantastic performance, make the Reds look rock-solid at the back. While Man City may still end up winning the Premier League this season, considering how they steamrolled their way to the title in the 2017/18 campaign, even if the Reds miss out, they should still be praised for their efforts this season as they’ve done themselves proud.
