Former Stoke City defender Danny Higginbotham hit back at a Liverpool supporter in a fiery Twitter exchange on Tuesday.
Higginbotham was replying to a Reds fan who quipped ‘Danny who?’ in response to the Sky Sports pundit suggesting to talkSPORT that he would be happy for Manchester City to beat his old club Manchester United on Wednesday night.
“You remember,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “The lad who was part of the Stoke team that got two draws v you when you missed out on winning the league by 4 points.”
Higginbotham is referring to the 2008-09 season when Rafael Benitez’s side missed out on Premier League glory by four points, despite losing just twice all season.
"As a #MUFC fan you never want to lose to City…
…but you don't want to be the club that handed Liverpool the title!"
We think @Higginbotham05 will be supporting Man City tomorrow ?
Is it OK for United fans to want to lose to City to stop #LFC winning the league? ? pic.twitter.com/tj6OL61CdR

OPINION
Really, what did this supporter expect when he made his comment? To be honest, he likely didn’t think he would get any response from Higginbotham whatsoever, that’s why he didn’t tag him in his tweet. However, the former Stoke stalwart was clearly primed and ready for this sort of response from the Liverpool faithful. He obviously did his homework and made sure he had this one in his back pocket ready for any big mouth supporters. To say ‘Danny who?’ is just a stupid. Higginbotham likely achieved far more in his career that Ian the Liverpool fan ever will. But, where football clubs are concerned, there’s not much room for logical thinking. Supporters tend to see red – no pun intended – when they feel as if someone has it in for their team. It really shouldn’t concern them at all, but of course it does. Still, it is strange to see United fans and ex players saying they wouldn’t mind City beating them on Wednesday.
