Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Reds starlet Rhian Brewster suffered a knock in his comeback game on Friday.

The 19-year-old made his first appearance since long term injury in a friendly for the Reds’ U23s side against Northwestern University, getting on the scoresheet in the process. However, Klopp has revealed that the contest didn’t come without consequence.

“Rhian got a knock with the keeper, bruised hip, so we will have to see,” he said at his pre match press conference, as per journalist James Pearce’s personal Twitter account.

“It’s nice to see him back. His birthday this week, 19 years old, crazy, so much to come. The door is wide open for him,” the former Borussia Dortmund boss finished.

OPINION

It’s definitely a shame that Brewster picked up a knock here. This was his first game back from a serious injury and so it would have been nice for him to have emerged from it unscathed. However, it doesn’t sound as if it’s anything too serious. Klopp seems quite cheerful in his comments here, which likely wouldn’t be the case if something bad had happened to the teenager. Hopefully he recovers from this quickly and is able to feature regularly for Liverpool’s U23s between now and the end of the season. That will allow him to regain his fitness and get back to match sharpness and top form again, before competing for a first team squad place over pre season. He has the potential to be a first team player next term, but he needs game time to get back up to speed if that is to happen. However, Klopp is obviously massively high on him and feels the door is open for him to make a big impact at Anfield in the future.
