Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana missed the 3-1 win against Southampton on Friday due to a minor muscle problem, according to reliable journalist James Pearce.

Liverpool Echo journalist Pearce revealed on his personal Twitter account that the £110,000-a-week [Spotrac] player was ruled out of the match against his former club after missing the 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend.

The 30-year-old’s last start came against Fulham in their 2-1 win over the Cottagers on 17 March.

OPINION

Liverpool could have done with the likes of Lallana in this 3-1 win over the Saints. Their midfield was not particularly impressive for the entire evening, aside from the goal scored by Lallana’s replacement Naby Keita. He will no doubt be hoping to make a return against Porto in the Champions League quarter-final next week due to his problem only being minor, something which could see Keita drop back to the bench once again. He is probably itching to return to action after a number of weeks away from the pitch, so if he recovers in time, do not be surprised if Jurgen Klopp picks him to start in the week. Lallana has not been a regular this season, but the manager has placed some faith in him lately, something which he has repaid. Nevertheless, Klopp was no doubt gutted to be without Lallana for this one – but luckily Mo Salah spared their blushes.
