Liverpool have contacted agent Jorge Mendes about Benfica star Joao Felix, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news site reports on their website that the Reds have made their interest in the 19-year-old clear to his agent Mendes, however, they do not want to pay the nine-figure £106million release clause in his contract.

The report adds that Liverpool had scouts attend Benfica’s Europa League win over Eintracht Frankfurt last Thursday, where Felix scored three goals in a 4-2 win.

OPINION

Liverpool had scouts cast an eye over Felix last Thursday, but the fact that they have officially registered their interest in signing him will certainly excite a lot of Liverpool fans. He is one of the most sought-after players in Europe at the moment, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona also on his trail. The Reds face a battle to get him though, as they have baulked at the £106 million release clause that has been inserted into his contract. That is a rather substantial for someone of his age, and it seems as though it has put Liverpool off slightly. The fact that they have contacted Mendes about him shows that they are rather keen on him though, so it will be interesting to see if they change their minds about coughing up that type of money. If they do, then most of the Liverpool fans will surely be in dreamland – as his addition would propel them to even greater heights.
